    Hello all,
Just started studying for the BGP exam.
Anyone knows if ‘Cisco.CertifyMe.642-661.v2010-03-04.by.Joseph.242q.vce’ is valid or not?

    May 31st, 2011 at 11:53 | #3

    did the BGP 642 661 on 30th june 2011 and had 975.
we had 4 or 3 labs.one did not show any routes coz of ip prefix list filtering out some rules.Another one u had to enable syncronization and then to change default weight on one of the neighbors to make it the preffered path.Another lab could not form neighbour relationship due to ebg-multipath command missing.
    Cisco.CertifyMe .642-661.v2011-04-21.by.Ross.250q is VERY VALID.

I’m reading the BGP design & implementation + Cisco.CertifyMe .642-661.v2011-04-21.by.Ross.250q. I hope passing this test in 2 weeks.

BTW, someone have a picture or some information regarding the simulation for this exam?? Jude just gave us a good idea but if someone could add more data it will be pretty appreciate.

    Thanks all of you

On the i found an error on the questioner 642-661.v2011-04-21.by.Ross.250q. Look Q238, it said:

    QUESTION 238
What do the following commands accomplish?

    router(config-router)#neighbor {ip address} route-map {name} out
    router(config)#route-map {name} permit 10
    router(config-route-map)#set as-path prepend {AS-Number} {AS-Number}

The questioner said B:They influence inbound-traffic BGP path selection.

BUT it will be A:They influence outbound-traffic BGP path selection.

Here is an exemple from cisco (look as-path prepend)

Answer for question 72 on 642-661.v2011-04-21.by.Ross.250q is wrong. Answer should be:

Both loopbacks should be injected into the IGP so that each router can reach the other router’s loopback. Answer B is wrong, open messages should be sourced from the loopback interface at least from one router.

  8. Anonymous
    June 12th, 2011 at 17:59 | #8

right – they should be injected, but there would be still problem because there is no bgp multi-hop command set
    I think B is correct

Could anyone pls confirm the correct answer: I’ve had two different answers both from CCIE’s….cheers

Why can using the ip tcp path-mtu-discovery command improve BGP convergence?

    A. Smaller MSS sizes may reduce BGP convergence times.
    B. BGP is enabled to fragment its large update packets.
    C. The BGP memory requirements on routers are reduced.
    D. Single packet sizes in TCP sessions are limited.
    E. BGP is allowed to use a larger TCP window size.

    June 16th, 2011 at 15:05 | #10

@ Anonymous: ebgp-multihop is not necessary on IBGP sessions, hence the keyword EBGP. TTL is 255 by default on IBGP open messages. B is wrong answer is C.

@ Mr Be: answer is A

Another answer some what unclear to me.

My idea and partial knowledge is:
I know ‘network’ command is useful to summarize prefixes learned from other routing protocols but i’m not sure the answer given is 100% correct.

Q:Which BGP router configuration mode command is best used to summarize prefixes learned from
    other BGP peers?

    A. network
    B. aggregate-address
    C. auto-summary
    D. synchronization
    Answer: A

    any wise solutions please.

    June 17th, 2011 at 14:14 | #13

All TCP sessions are bounded by a limit on the number of bytes that can be transported in a single packet. This limit, known as the Maximum Segment Size (MSS), is 536 bytes by default. In other words, TCP breaks up packets in a transmit queue into 536 byte chunks before passing packets down to the IP layer. Use the show ip bgp neighbors | include max data command to display the MSS of BGP peers:

Router# show ip bgp neighbors | include max data
Datagrams (max data segment is 536 bytes):
Datagrams (max data segment is 536 bytes):
Datagrams (max data segment is 536 bytes):
Datagrams (max data segment is 536 bytes):

The advantage of a 536 byte MSS is that packets are not likely to be fragmented at an IP device along the path to the destination since most links use an MTU of at least 1500 bytes. The disadvantage is that smaller packets increase the amount of bandwidth used to transport overhead. Since BGP builds a TCP connection to all peers, a 536 byte MSS affects BGP convergence times.

The solution is to enable the Path MTU (PMTU) feature, using the ip tcp path-mtu-discovery command. You can use this feature to dynamically determine how large the MSS value can be without creating packets that need to be fragmented. PMTU allows TCP to determine the smallest MTU size among all links in a TCP session. TCP then uses this MTU value, minus room for the IP and TCP headers, as the MSS for the session. If a TCP session only traverses Ethernet segments, then the MSS will be 1460 bytes. If it only traverses Packet over SONET (POS) segments, then the MSS will be 4430 bytes. The increase in MSS from 536 to 1460 or 4430 bytes reduces TCP/IP overhead, which helps BGP converge faster.

After enabling PMTU, again use the show ip bgp neighbors | include max data command to see the MSS value per peer:

Router# show ip bgp neighbors | include max data
Datagrams (max data segment is 1460 bytes):
Datagrams (max data segment is 1460 bytes):
Datagrams (max data segment is 1460 bytes):
Datagrams (max data segment is 1460 bytes):

Having double checked the answer shouldn’t the answer be rephrased as:

    A. LARGER MSS sizes may reduce BGP convergence times.

Setting PMTU allows IP packets to be larger than the BGP default (somewhere in the 400-500B range if I recall correctly). This means you have more data per packet and thus, less overhead. This is similar to the argument for jumbo frames in, say, a SAN environment.

E sounds tempting, however remember that windowing is handled at layer 4, is negotiated and is variable (hopefully it keeps increasing) allowing for more data before an ACK is required.

    @ ME BE

I would go with answer B. Aggregate address.

Using the network command , makes the bgp proc looks to the ip routing table for valid route.

The question asks for the command that aggregates prefixes learned from
other BGP peers? BGP peeres send BGP routes.

Aggregate address command looks to the bgp table specifically to find specific BGP route falling in the aggregate”

“Using the aggregate-address command with no keywords will create an aggregate entry in the BGP or multiprotocol BGP routing table if any more-specific BGP or multiprotocol BGP routes are available that fall in the specified range.

  31. Anon
    July 26th, 2011 at 04:07 | #31

    @ ME BE
    @ ccie2b

    I agree with ccie2b.

“Which BGP router configuration mode command is best used to summarize prefixes learned from other BGP peers?”
If you used the network command to originate a supernet of more specific routes learned from a BGP neighbour, you would indeed be summarising those routes, but the more specific routes would also exist and would be passed through to other BPG neighbours just like any other route. There would be no way to easily suppress those routes (unless you played with some route maps). Where aggregate route allows you to easily control how you suppress routes.

I took the BGP exam only, 642-661

Stupid ass simulator!! never took my commands. “a junior admin configured the R1 router and now no prefixes are being received from the IBGP neighbor. He said that wanted to filter out some routes. Fix iT”

N then the god damn simulator got stucked in active or something
tried removing the prefix list from the neighbor with the no command but said “command not supported in this simulation”

then tried to remove the prefix list so i could create it again with the right sentence, but never took that command either.

So ive tried adding a new line with permit any after the deny network X but could not get to restart the IBGP session with that neighbor coz clear ip bgp neighbor ABCD was a not supported command in this stupid ass simulation!!

Passed the exam coz passing score was 750 xD

  34. Anon
    August 3rd, 2011 at 02:56 | #34

It didn’t let you clear the IBGP session like that because, as I remember, it asks for a soft reconfig. The simulator was doing you a favour by not letting you enter the wrong command.

I took the exam today and passed with 887. I completed a BGP implementation last week and have been learning alot about it.
I must say that the Ross dump and this site was very helpful regarding preparing for the exam. I have been reading alot on BGP and I would say that I understand it and how to implement it successfully ( I completed multi-homed BGP with redistribution into EIGRP) but you need the Ross questions to prepare you for the Cisco Test.

Please note that CCIP is being phased out. CCNP Service Provider is the replacement and will have new syllabus. Current CCIP candidates who has done BGP/BGP+MPLS and ROUTE will have exemptions and will need to do SPCORE and SPEDGE to be certified CCNP-SP.

    Hey Guys,
Planning to take BGP b4 end of July. can you please confirm which book to use to prepare for the exam – I was suggested by a friend to read two books – BGP Routing and Internet Architect. Given the short period of time, i cant go through two books – any suggestions please

Whats the difference between the ross 250 questions and the gryffen 261 questions?
Is ross valid? I used ross to prepare but found this forum just now. Exam is in 2 days so no time to go over the gryffen 261 questions. 🙁
Off course I read the book by Sam and watched the nuggets, I’m not just looking at the ross questions, just using it to gauge where I stand and then reading up on the weaker topics.
